If you are interested in open source scientific software development, and have some experience in creating software that can be used to explore and analyse complex data, then read on ! The position is within Jalview’s development team, which is part of the Barton Group at the University of Dundee in the new Research Division of Computational Biology which will occupy one floor of the new CTIR building from March 2013.     In June 2013, Jim Procter was invited to give an introduction to Jalview webinar for SBGrid. This is now available on youtube here. Whilst checking out this link, we also noticed some other excellent Jalview resources. Isabel Duarte has uploaded a jalview introductory tutorial in Portuguese, Tippitapitus screencast the creation of a phylogenetic tree with Jalview, and even put it to music! And, another musical video showing how Jalview can be used to view the results from the genome. Read more →

  • Last Day to register for the 4th Jalview and JABA residential workshop!

    Join us at the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre in Oxford for the fourth Jalview Residential Course and Hackathon, which we’ve now renamed to the Jalview and JABA residential workshop ! The workshop takes place from 9am on 12th December to 5pm on the 13th December 2013. It begins with a hands-on Jalview training course, followed by evening dinner at St Catherine’s College.   • Version 2.0.1 of JABAWS is now available

    A new version of JAva Bioinformatics Analysis Web Services (JABAWS) is now available from the JABAWS homepage. This release is compatible with Jalview version 2.8 and other existing JABAWS clients, so existing Jalview Desktop users will not need to do anything to benefit from this new release, but we recommend people with in-house and personal JABAWS servers upgrade as soon as possible. JABAWS allows users of the Jalview Desktop to access multiple sequence alignment, protein disorder prediction and amino acid conservation analysis programs. Read more →

    Jalview is made freely available to all thanks to a grant from the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). This funds Jalview development, training courses, website, back-end servers and email support. We are currently seeking renewal of this grant and letters of support are critical to the success of this renewal.   • Jalview and 2013 Google Summer of Code at the Scottish Phylogeny Discussion Group

    On Monday 18th February, Jim Procter gave the opening talk at the Scottish Phylogeny Discussion Group meeting, which was held at the James Hutton Institutein Invergowrie - just a little further up the Tay from Dundee. The program for the afternoon also included some great talks from Rosanna Alderson (John Mitchell’s group in St. Andrews), Cristiane Calixto (John Brown’s group in JHI & U.   • Jalview in 2012 and 2013

    2012 was quite a year here at jalview.org. A number of long running projects finally bore fruit with the launch of our new website and logo, and the release of Jalview Version 2.8. The November release of Jalview was the first to support JABAWS 2, which was launched in December 2011, and to include RNA visualization features developed by our 2010 and 2011 Google Summer of Code students: Lauren Lui and Jan Engelhart.
