  • New Jalview Patch Release: 2.11.1.3

    The latest patch release for Jalview 2.11.1 is now available via over the air update and the Jalview download page. This release provides patches for critical bugs affecting the Find function, and also affecting alignment and analysis of linked sets of CDS and Protein sequences. New installers are also provided to address problems when installing Jaliew on Windows to locations containing spaces in the path (only affects new installations). As usual, see Jalview Version 2.   • Jalview article featured in the PDB’s July Education Corner Quarterly Newsletter

    This month, the Jalview article ‘A Secondary School Bioinformatics Workbook for Visualizing DNA, RNA and Proteins’ was published in the RCSB’s PDB Education Corner Quarterly Newsletter (Issue 86-July 2020). Read more… The Jalview team have developed a workbook entitled ‘‘Visualizing DNA, RNA & Proteins Jalview School Workbook’. It contains four practical web- based projects.   • In Covid-19 lockdown, the Jalview team run their school workshops remotely

    Suzanne Duce had been invited up to Elgin Academy to run a Jalview Schools Workshop with the Higher and Advanced Higher Biology classes. But this had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Undeterred, the Jalview team ran the course remotely using Blackboard Collaborate. On Friday 12th June, Mungo Carstairs, Ben Soares and Suzanne Duce logged on and hosted the course with the students.   • Jalview’s 1st online training workshop was a great success!

    On Wednesday 29th April, the Jalview team ran their first online training workshops using Blackboard Collaborate. The team, Jim Procter, Suzanne Duce, Mungo Carstairs and Ben Soares were joined by 21 workshop participants from across the world. The course ran over three afternoons and involved practical exercises and presentations. The first-afternoon session introduced Jalview and its capabilities, how to load, edit and save sequences, create and analyse multiple alignments (using trees and PCAs), and generate figures for publication.   • Online Workshop and a New Jalview Release - 2.11.1.0

    The Jalview Team are pleased to announce that Version 2.11.1.0 of Jalview is now available! Jalview 2.11.1.0 installer and April 29-May 1st Online Training Course In addition to some great new features, this release includes important fixes for the Jalview Desktop installations on Unix, Windows and OSX. Unfortunately, these fixes can’t be automatically installed through Jalview’s automatic update mechanism, so whilst your Jalview installation may already have updated itself to version 2.   • Jalview joins the STEM Family Fun Day at Charleston Community Centre

    On Sunday 1st March, Suzanne Duce took a laptop and screen to Charleston Community Centre for a STEM Family Fun Day, as part of the Dundee Women’s Festival. Around 100 visitors attended the event where children got the chance to try out Jalview’s dinosaur hands-on activity. Whilst some of the older visitors tested out the ‘Visualising DNA, RNA & Proteins’ Jalview Schools Workbook.

  • Jalview wins the School of Life Sciences Public Engagement Project of the Year

    Jalview’sPublic Engagement team led by Suzanne Duce won the 2019 School of Life Sciences ‘Brian Cox Public Engagement Project of the Year’ award at the University of Dundee. The award panel commented that they were impressed with the scale and range of activities that have been undertaken and the interactive nature of the resources that have been produced. They particularly highlighted the school’s educational resources. Suzanne collected the award at the School of Life Sciences Review of the Year on Wednesday 15th January 2020. Read more →

  • Jalview’s Schools Workbook tested by pupils at Forfar Academy

    Ben Soares and Suzanne Duce visited Forfar Academy, Angus on Wednesday 18th December to test the ‘Visualising DNA, RNA & Proteins in Jalview’ Schools Workbook with a class of 17 Nat 5 biology pupils. The students used JalviewJS to view the sequences of DNA, RNA and a variety of proteins alongside the 3D structures. They also compared the myoglobin sequence of a human with myoglobin sequences from other species. Then they viewed the coding DNA sequence alongside its protein product in a split-screen viewer.
