  • Dundee hosts the ELIXIR-UK All Hands 2019 meeting

    The School of Life Sciences in the University of Dundee hosted this year’s ELIXIR-UK All Hands meeting. On Monday 9th December, Geoff Barton opened the two-day meeting. There was a range of presentations, talks and break-out sessions. In the ELIXIR-UK Node Services section, Stuart MacGowan talked about the Dundee Resource for Sequence Analysis and Structure Prediction and Jim Procter described new features in Jalview.

  • Jalview 2.11 from bioconda and homebrew

    We’re pleased to announce Jalview 2.11.0 is now also available for installation via bioconda. Both the bioconda package and homebrew cask provide a ‘jalview’ command line tool that can be used either to launch the GUI or access Jalview’s command line from your own scripts.

  • Jalview’s school workbook tested during Doors Open Day

    On Saturday 14th September at the School of Medicine, Jalview took part in Dundee’s Doors Open Day. Visitors tried out the new ‘Visualising DNA, RNA & Proteins’ Jalview School Workbook. The exercise that identified the genetic mutation responsible for sickle cell anaemia using Jalview’s DNA/protein split-screen viewer proved very popular.

  • Jalview at ISMB/ECCB 2019 in Basel

    The Jalview team were at the ISMB/ECCB 2019 conference in July where they hosted a booth. The hands-on demos with Jalview experts proved very popular, occasionally delegates were queuing to chat with Stuart MacGowan! Mungo Carstairs spoke about variants and the new VCF file options in his ignite talkon Wednesday 24th July. The next day, Suzanne Duce gave a talk in the Educational COSI about the Jalview YouTube training resources. Mungo also presented a poster in the BioVis session and Bob Hanson presented a poster in the BOSC session. Read more →

  • Jalview 2.11 - new installer and new capabilities!

    We are quite excited about the release of Jalview 2.11.0! This major release introduces support for loading VCF files, and new filters and shading models for sequence features. Under the hood, we’ve addressed many bugs, and also made some important changes in the way the Jalview desktop isinstalled and launched. The Jalview Launcher and Update System. Jalview’s new installation model means you’ll only need to download and install Jalview once. After installation, Jalview will automatically keep itself up to date. Read more →

  • Jalview features in DJCAD degree art show

    Allison Meighan, a final year jewellery and metalwork undergraduate at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee, took inspiration for her final year project from mitochondrial DNA sequences. She compared Mesolithic MtDNA with contemporary British MtDNA using Jalview to align the strands of code and to visualise the points of difference. There were 38 differences noted in the 165,569 bases of the modern MtDNA ring. Read more →

  • Jalview demos in LifeSpace gallery

    Dr Suzanne Duce ran hands-on demonstrations of Jalview for the public in the University’s LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery on Saturday 11th May. This was part of the Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research’s Drug Design: Drug Discovery afternoon of activities and tours. Visitors got the opportunity of using Jalview to visualize how medicines work at the molecular level.

  • Ben visits St Columba's RC primary school

    Jalview’s newest member Ben Soares visited St Columba’s RC Primary School in Cupar on Tuesday 2nd April. Ben spoke to around fifty 8-9-year-olds in the P4 and P4/5 classes about computers, coding and computational biology. Ben fired up Jalview to compare a Tyrannosaurus Rex protein in the PDB with those from other species.   • Edinburgh Genomics host Jalview training course on 29-30 April 2019

    Edinburgh Genomics are hosting Jalview workshops on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April. At the ‘Introductory workshop’ on Monday 29th April, participants will learn about multiple sequence alignments and how to create, analyse and visualise them with the Jalview Desktop. Participants will explore Jalview’s capabilities for working with phylogenetic trees, 3D structures and annotation from public databases. At the ‘Advanced workshop’ on Tuesday 30th April, participants will work with genomic variant data from Ensembl and Gnomad, scripting Jalview with Groovy, and taking advantage of UCSF Chimera’s 3D structure analysis capabilities in Jalview.   • BBSRC EastBio PhD students learn about Jalview

    BBSRC EastBio PhD students ran Jalview on their laptops as part of the ‘Visual and Verbal Bend to Science Communications’ DTP workshop held at the School of Life Sciences on 27th February. This was followed by a Do’s and Don’ts of Dataviz presentation by Jim Procter.
